ATHENS, Ga. - Fighting Illini senior Dennis Nevolo advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday afternoon at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Seventh-seeded Nevolo cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over North Carolina State's Jaime Pulgar to advance to the round of 32 for the fourth time in his career. The win marks a single-season career-high 31 singles victories for the Gurnee, Ill., native.
Fellow senior Roy Kalmanovich did not fare as well, taking a 6-2, 6-3 loss to defending champion and top-seeded Steve Johnson, who now has won 67 consecutive singles matches. Kalmanovich ends his singles career with 75-41 mark, including 25 wins this season.
Nevolo will face No. 20 Marcel Thiemann (Ole Miss) on Thursday at 9 a.m. and will team up with Kalmanovich to take on Mississippi State's George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin in opening-round action of the NCAA Doubles Championships Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
