EAST LANSING, Ill. - After suffering a disappointing loss against Michigan on Saturday, the 19th-ranked Fighting Illini women's tennis team (13-6, 5-2 Big Ten) fought back to take a convincing 7-0 win over Michigan State (8-10, 0-7) Sunday afternoon at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The win marks Illinois' sixth shutout this season and seventh victory in its last eight contests.
"It's always nice to get a sweep," Illini head coach Michelle Dasso said. "It's important for us to get Misia (Kedzierski) some doubles experience and also see Chelcie (Abajian) back in action in our singles lineup. This last stretch of regular-season play is going to be a great test of our team's mental strength, as each team we face is dangerous."
The Illini captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, as redshirt senior Marisa Lambropoulos and freshman Melissa Kopinski captured an 8-2 victory over Nicole Herzog and Michaela Silesova, and junior Rachael White teamed up with senior Amy Allin to down Marina Bohrer and Dana Guentert, 8-5.
The Illini success continued in singles action, as the Orange and Blue won every match in straight sets. Sophomore Allison Falkin took down Olga Chernova, 6-0, 6-2, at the top spot, while Lambropoulos cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bohrer on Court 2. Allin turned in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Silesova at No. 3, and White won her second match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Katarina Lingel on Court 4. Sophomore Misia Kedzierski added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Julianne Gruber at No. 5, while senior Chelcie Abajian downed Jennifer Yen, 7-5, 6-2 on Court 6.
The Orange and Blue will return to Urbana next weekend to host Ohio State on Friday, April 13 at 4 p.m. and Penn State on Sunday, April 15 at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
