CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Roy Kalmanovich led the Illini men's tennis team on Saturday in day-two action of the University of Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational. The Framingham, Mass., native captured two singles victories, including one over a top-25 opponent, and advanced to the first-place final in his draw.

"Roy started firing on all cylinders," Illini assistant coach Marcos Asse said. "In his first match, he played really well and got through it quickly. And even though he lost his first set in his second match, he was doing everything right. With a few extremely minor adjustments, he really settled in and took the second and third sets pretty convincingly. Bruno (Abdelnour) did everything right as well but lost a heartbreaker after a couple bad breaks. I'm extremely pleased with his performance, though."

In singles action, Kalmanovich cruised to a quarterfinal victory over Maryland's John Collins, 6-0, 6-1. In his second match, the Illini senior dropped his first set but quickly bounced back to capture his first come-from-behind win of the season, defeating No. 25 Luka Somen of Virginia Tech, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the first-place match in his bracket.

Meanwhile, junior Bruno Abdelnour advanced to the semifinals with a walkover against the nation's top-ranked freshman, Mitchell Frank of Virginia. Abdelnour fell in his semifinal match, however, losing a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 thriller to Daniel Kreyman of Wake Forest. Classmate Stephen Hoh dropped both of his singles matches, while he and Abdelnour also fell in doubles play.

The Illini will be back in action tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT for the final day of the University of Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational. Results and recap will be available at fightingillini.com.
