CARY, N.C. - The Illini women's tennis team captured three singles matches Saturday in day two at the Duke Fab Four Invitational. Sophomore
Allison Falkin and freshman
Melissa Kopinski each claimed their second singles victories of the tournament, while senior
Amy Allin secured her first win of the fall season.
"The quality of competition is extremely high and each player has learned and grown from the matches so far," Illini head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Freshman Kopinski played stretches of flawless tennis today. Falkin composed herself with the leadership qualities I know she possesses and is competing well in her first tournament of the year. Allin found her rhythm today and her tenacity is never lacking, and (Rachael) White realizes she needs to play with confidence for herself and this team and understands that her aggressive style of play and mindset are going to give her the best chance to display that swagger."
Kopinski continued her success in her first tournament as an Illini, capturing her second collegiate victory in as many days with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Duke's Annie Mulholland. The Illini newcomer stumbled in her next set, however, falling to No. 27 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Falkin quickly rebounded after losing her first set, taking a lead over William and Mary's Jeltje Loomans. Loomans was forced to retire the match due to injury, but at the time, Falkin had captured a 6-5 lead. Allin also picked up a victory for the Orange and Blue, downing Katie Kargl of William and Mary, 6-4, 6-2.
The Illini return to action tomorrow for the final day of the Fab Four Invitational. Results and recap will be available at fightingillini.com at the end of the tournament.
