"Stuff Huff" returns for sixth year
For the sixth straight year, Illinois is promoting its home opening volleyball match as "Stuff Huff." Inspired by the 2004 victory over top-ranked Southern Cal in the championship match of the State Farm Illini Classic that saw over 3,000 fans pack Huff in an incredible atmosphere, the Illini began a tradition of choosing a key early non-conference match to "Stuff Huff." It has traditionally been the first home match of the season and 2011 is no exception.
The promotion specifically targets its loyal fanatical student supporting section, the Spike Squad. Once again this year, men's basketball coach Bruce Weber and the Fighting Illini basketball team will be outside of Huff beginning at 5:30 p.m. manning the grill and providing free food to the first 2,000 students. They will then lead the student crowd inside Huff to get psyched for the Illini's match against Tennessee. The event will also serve as a membership drive for Illini Pride and Orange Krush.
Illinois has drawn over 2,000 fans for the event each of the past five years, including a crowd of 3,129, the largest in 14 years, in a four-set victory over Illinois State in 2006. That year, over 1,600 University of Illinois students packed Huff to add to the tremendous atmosphere. Last year a crowd of 2,688 saw Illinois defeat BYU.
Frequent Flyers: Illinois and Dayton have made a habit of meeting on the volleyball court in recent years. The Illini and Flyers have played four straight years from 2006-2009 with the teams splitting those four contests. The teams most recently played in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament at Huff Hall with the Illini prevailing in four sets. Dayton won five-set contests in both 2007 (at the Dayton Flyer Classic) and 2008 (at Tennessee) with the Illini winning a regular season match at Huff Hall in 2006. Overall Illinois leads the series, 5-3.
• Illinois is 3-2 all-time vs. Tennessee, which includes a five-set win over the Lady Vols in that same 2008 tournament in Knoxville.
• The Illini lead the all-time series with Houston, 3-0, with the latest match a 3-0 victory over the Cougars at the 2004 C&C Services Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Tournament of champions: All four teams at the State Farm Illini Classic started the season by going 3-0 and winning their season-opening tournaments. Illinois won the BYU/Nike Invitational with victories over BYU (3-0), St. Mary's (3-0) and UCSB (3-1). Dayton defeated North Dakota (3-1), James Madison (3-0) and Green Bay (3-0) to claim the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Tournament. Houston downed Lipscomb (3-0), Xavier (3-0) and Central Arkansas (3-1) to take the Flo Hyman Invitational. Tennessee won its own tournament with wins over Villanova (3-0), Ohio (3-2) and Maryland (3-2).
