Despite taking the early advantage after doubles, the Illini (9-11, 5-4 Big Ten) were overcome in singles as Minnesota (6-15, 2-7) rallied back to claim a 4-3 victory Friday night at Baseline Tennis Center. Junior Amy Allin and sophomore Rachael White led the squad with wins in both singles and doubles.
"The loss today was really disappointing," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "We need to take a long, hard look at what we want to do to get better and what that will entail. We'll need to be prepared for a tough Wisconsin team and hope to finish the season with a win."
Allin and White improved to 2-0 in Big Ten doubles matches, as they defeated Magdalena Wiecha and Alexa Palen at the No. 1 spot, 8-6, before the new tandem of sophomore Breanne Smutko and Misia Kedzierski topped Yuliana Umanets and Doron Muravnik, 9-7, to give the Illini a 1-0 lead.
The Gophers proved to be too much in singles, however, as they claimed wins at Nos. 3-6 to secure the win. No. 117 White and Allin picked up wins at the top two spots, as White defeated Palen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and Allin downed Alessandra Ferrazzi, 7-5, 6-2, for her team-best 20th win of the year.
Illinois will conclude the regular season at Wisconsin on Sunday at noon.
