EVANSTON, Ill. - Fourth-seeded Jimmy Kennedy out-performed his seed with a third-place finish by defeating second-seeded Montell Marion (Iowa) 9-6 at 141 pounds to help the Illini to a sixth-place finish as a team at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. He was one of six Illinois wrestlers to place at the tournament and four who qualified automatically for the NCAA Championships on March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pa.

B.J. Futrell (133) took fourth place, Eric Terrazas (149) finished fifth, Conrad Polz (165) took sixth, Jackson Morse (157) placed seventh and Joe Barczak finished eighth (197), with Futrell, Kennedy, Terrazas and Dallago qualifying automatically for the NCAA Championships. The at-large selections and the full brackets will be announced on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.

"I was pleased with some of our performances and disappointed with a few others, but that's how this tournament always is," Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan said. "Now we have to fine-tune some things in the next couple of weeks and get some good training done."

No. 3 seed Tony Ramos (Iowa) got a leg against No. 4 Futrell 30 seconds into the third-place match at 133, lifted it and hit a takedown, but Futrell escaped in 14 seconds to cut the margin to 2-1. Ramos hit another sweep single, lifted the leg and dropped Futrell again to go up 4-1. Ramos rode him out and Futrell started down in the second. The Illini sophomore escaped after a long ride by Ramos and the Hawkeye took a 4-2 lead to the third. Ramos started down in the third and got out in 10 seconds, leaving his riding time at 2:01. Neither man could land a shot in the third and Ramos took the 6-2 win to place third, giving Futrell fourth place.

Kennedy got deep on a double-leg against Marion (Iowa) and planted him for the takedown with 1:04 left in the first period of their third-place bout at 141. Marion rolled through and escaped after 29 seconds and the period ended in the neutral position with Kennedy leading 2-1. Kennedy started down in the second and escaped after four seconds, then shot in on Marion's ankles and scored a takedown on the edge. Marion broke free after 16 seconds, cutting Kennedy's margin to 5-2 with 1:30 left in the period. But Marion got a leg and dumped Kennedy for a takedown that brought him within 5-4. Kennedy escaped quickly and Marion nearly scored on the edge but Kennedy was able to sprawl out and the period ended with the Illini senior leading 6-4. Marion started down in the third and escaped in two seconds, cutting Kennedy's margin to one point. Kennedy hit a single on the edge and worked it into a double-leg, planting Marion in the center to go up 8-5. Kennedy rode him until the 45-second mark, getting his riding time up to 1:20, and neither man finished another shot as Kennedy took the 9-6 win and third place.

Fourth-seeded Terrazas scored a first-period takedown against eighth-seeded Danny Zilverberg (Minnesota) in their fifth-place match at 149 and added another takedown and two near-fall points with 1:10 left in the second period to go up 6-1. He rode out Zilverberg and they started neutral in the second period. After Zilverberg couldn't finish a shot, Terrazas shot off a neutral restart and planted him for a takedown at the end of the match, adding the riding-time point for a 9-1 major decision and fifth place.

Fifth-seeded Polz nearly gave up an early takedown to No. 6 seed Dan Yates (Michigan) when Yates grabbed his leg, lifted it and circled behind, but he wasn't able to take Polz to the mat and no points were awarded. Polz then got deep on a single but Yates was able to kick out to avoid any scoring. Polz took another good shot that Yates was able to fend off and the period ended scoreless. Yates started down in the second and escaped after five seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Yates shot back in on a leg, Polz tried to fend it off by grabbing a high tight waist, but Yates rolled him onto his back for a quick fall in 3:22 to send Polz to sixth place, just missing an automatic qualifier spot for the NCAA Championships.

Fifth-seeded Dallago gave up a takedown to third-seeded Grant Gambrall (Iowa) off a re-shot with two minutes left in the first period and gave up a pair of two-point near-falls to fall behind 6-0 after a period. Gambrall started down in the second and escaped after 19 seconds when Dallago nearly locked in a cradle. Dallago shot in on a leg near the edge but the action was stopped because it was potentially dangerous. Gambrall nearly got a takedown on the edge but he never established control as they tumbled out of bounds. The period ended with Gambrall leading 7-0 with 1:44 of riding time and Dallago started down in the third. Dallago rolled through for the escape but Gambrall shot in on a leg and eventually worked it into a takedown with a minute left for a 9-1 lead. Dallago broke free after a restart to cut the margin to 9-2, but he couldn't land any late shots and Gambrall added the riding-time point to take a 10-2 major decision, pushing Dallago to sixth place.

Morse and Sean Nemec (Ohio State) traded shots in the first period of their seventh-place match but were scoreless after three minutes. Nemec started down in the second and Morse rode him out before the Illini freshman started down in the third. Morse escaped in five seconds to go up 1-0 then hit a double-leg with 33 seconds left for the decisive takedown. He added the riding-time point for the 4-0 win to take seventh place.

Seventh-seeded Barczak and No. 8 seed Peter Capone (Ohio State) got into a scramble on the edge early in their seventh-place bout at 197 but neither man could gain an advantage and no points were awarded. They got in another scramble near the end of the first period but Barczak couldn't clear Capone's foot and a stalemate was called. Capone started down in the second and escaped in three seconds. Barczak hit a single but Capone managed to force another stalemate. Barczak got in on another shot but couldn't finish it and Capone took a 1-0 lead to the third. Barczak started down and nearly kicked out three times but Capone forced stalemates all three times before taking an injury timeout. After returning to action, Barczak nearly got the reversal but time ran out and Capone took a 2-0 win, giving Barczak eighth place.

Futrell hit a five-point move against seventh-seeded Zac Stevens (Michigan) in the consolation semifinals at 133, using a drop off a tie-up with 1:54 left in the first period. Futrell rode him out and Stevens started down in the second, with Stevens breaking free after 30 seconds. Futrell shot in and hit a takedown on the edge to go up 7-1 and Stevens escaped to make it 7-2 after two periods with Futrell holding 2:41 of riding time. Futrell chose a neutral start to the third and hit a quick double-leg to go up 9-2 before cutting Stevens loose. Stevens got a late takedown but Futrell escaped and added the riding-time point for the 11-5 win to move into the third-place match.

Kennedy also hit a quick five-point move against Northwestern's sixth-seeded Kaleb Friedley in the 141 consolation semifinals, then added a takedown on the edge after Friedley escaped to go up 7-1. Kennedy cut him loose and worked a single-leg into a takedown with 15 seconds left for a 9-1 lead after three minutes. Friedley started down and Kennedy cut him loose in the second before using a textbook sweep single to get a takedown. He quickly took Friedley to his back and eventually worked for the pin at 4:33 to advance to the third-place match.

Terrazas and third-seeded Kurt Kinser (Indiana) traded shots but wrestled a scoreless first period in their consolation semifinal match at 149. Kinser started down in the second and Terrazas rode him for 1:02 before the Hoosier escaped. Neither man scored again in the second and Terrazas chose a neutral start to the third. Terrazas kept shooting and Kinser defended well throughout the third, with Terrazas adding the riding-time point to even the match 1-1 and send it to overtime. Terrazas worked off a Kinser counter to nearly get a takedown on the corner, but the Hoosier kept a high crotch locked as the sudden-victory period expired. Terrazas started down in the first tiebreak and Kinser rode him out. Kinser started down in the second tiebreak and escaped in nine seconds, then held onto Terrazas in an upper bodylock for the 2-1 win in tiebreaks, sending Terrazas to the fifth-place match.

Minnesota's third-seeded Cody Yohn shot in quickly on Polz in their 165-pound consolation semifinal match, but Polz locked on a high crotch and forced a stalemate. Yohn got a leg on the edge but Polz was able to force another stalemate and get a restart. The pair finished a scoreless first period and Yohn started down in the second. He escaped quickly for a 1-0 lead but Polz shot in and finished a takedown on the edge to go up 2-1 with 1:30 left in the period. Yohn nearly rolled through for a reversal but Polz rode him for 43 seconds before the Gopher escaped to tie it, 2-2 at the end of five minutes. Polz chose a neutral start to the third and Yohn shot with 12 seconds left, Polz defended it and nearly worked into a takedown but time expired, sending the match into overtime. Polz was the aggressor in the overtime period but Yohn blocked one of his shots and circled behind for the decisive takedown and the 4-2 win. Polz will wrestle for fifth place and an automatic qualifier spot at the NCAA Championships this afternoon.

Dallago gave up an early takedown to seventh-seeded C.J. Magrum (Ohio State) in their 184-pound consolation semifinal. Magrum rode him for 1:19 before losing hold and allowing Dallago to escape. The period ended with Magrum holding a 2-1 lead and the Buckeye started down in the second. Dallago rode him for nearly a minute before giving up a reversal as he tried to roll through for back points, putting Magrum up 4-1. Dallago escaped in 15 seconds and the pair ended the period on their feet as Magrum took a 4-2 lead to the third. Dallago started down in the third and kicked out in 13 seconds to get within 4-3. Dallago slipped behind Magrum off a shot by the Buckeye but couldn't take him to the ground and no points were awarded.
