URBANA, Ill. - Despite winning the doubles battle, the 28th-ranked Illini women's tennis team (2-4) couldn't over overcome No. 26 Virginia (4-0) in singles, as the Cavaliers claimed a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Atkins Tennis Center. Junior Chelcie Abajian collected her eighth win of the year for Illinois' lone singles win on the day.
"That was a tough doubles point to get from Virginia and it put us in a good position today," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "The match really could have gone either way. It just came down to a few points at the end. I was very impressed with our tenacity and it's something we really need with our schedule. The girls understand that, but it was nice to see that both days this week, they brought everything they had."
Illinois looked solid in doubles and took control of the match early with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 that went down to the wire. Senior Marisa Lambropoulos and junior Amy Allin held on to upset No. 16 Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde, 8-6, before the 15th-ranked duo of sophomore Rachael White and freshman Allison Falkin fought off several match points to secure a 9-8 (10) win over No. 10 Hana Tomljanovic and Emily Fraser.
Illinois is back in action next Sunday, Feb. 13 to host No. 24 South Carolina at 11 a.m. at Atkins Tennis Center.
