FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Dennis Nevolo continued his stellar run at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with two victories on Friday to advance to the semifinal round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
"Dennis played a great player in Kevin King tonight," Illini head coach Brad Dancer said. "It was a high quality tennis match. After going down a break in the third set there, Dennis kept his composure and handled the situation very well. I want to give a lot of credit to associate head coach Marcos (Asse), who came here and had Dennis locked in on his pre-match preparations and just going through all the rituals to get him to perform at his best, which he has been doing. Those guys have made a great team together. Now, Dennis gets a shot at Eric Quigley, who has been a bit of a nemesis for him, so we'll see if he can get over the hump."
No. 7 Nevolo captured a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over No. 9 Jose Hernandez of North Carolina in round-two action. In his following match, the Gurnee, Ill., native battled No. 85 Kevin King (Georgia Tech), taking a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 thriller to advance to the semifinals.
Meanwhile, No. 71 Roy Kalmanovich faced his second ranked opponent in as many days, falling to No. 22 Kyle McMorrow of Washington, 7-5, 6-3. With the loss, the Framingham, Mass., native ends the fall season with a 9-4 mark, including six victories over ranked opponents, with his only losses coming to top-25 players.
"It was not Roy's best tennis today," Dancer said. "But he'll recover and bounce back. He's definitely capable of performing better than he did today, and we certainly expect that from him."
Nevolo will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT to take on No. 3 Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
