IOWA CITY, Iowa - Junior Stephen Hoh ended his stellar run at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Monday with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Michigan State's Aaron Pfister in the tournament's title match. The Australia native went 5-1 in singles play throughout the four-day tournament to finish runner-up.
"I'd just like to congratulate Aaron Pfister on a great tournament and a job well done," Asse said. "He clearly was deserving of the title. The unfortunate part of the day was that Stephen just didn't execute well. It was not his best tennis today. Execution-wise and strategically, he did what he had to do leading up to today, but unfortunately, today was not his day. I think it was another missed chance for him this year to prove that he is one of the top players in the Big Ten and in the country."
Seventh-seeded Hoh captured a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Michigan State's Drew Lied in the semifinal round but couldn't continue his momentum in the final, falling to 12th-seeded Pfister.
Fellow Illini Dennis Nevolo and Roy Kalmanovich will be in action at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Nevolo and Kalmanovich qualified for the tournament with their quarterfinal berths at the ITA All-American Championships in early October.
