EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman
Tim Kopinski captured a singles victory at the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday to go a perfect 3-0 in singles action throughout the three-day tournament. Fellow newcomer
Ross Guignon was also victorious in his final singles match of the weekend to finish with a 2-1 mark.
"It was a great opportunity for the guys to play in the tournament," Illini head coach Brad Dancer said. "We really just need to continue to get better if these guys want to go in and make a challenge next weekend at Big Ten Singles. There's a lot of work to do for both of these guys. I think their goal coming in was to see how well they could perform. Big Ten Singles is only a week away, so I'm really glad that these guys got a chance to play this weekend."
Kopinski cruised to his third straight-set victory of the tournament, downing Northwestern's Nikhil Jayashankar, 6-1, 6-3. The Palos Hills, Ill., native was solid all weekend, going undefeated in both singles and doubles play. Guignon had success in his final match as well, capturing a 4-5, 6-4, (10-7) thriller over Wisconsin's Alexander Teppert.
The Illini will be back in action at the Big Ten Singles Tournament, Oct. 28-31 in Iowa City, Iowa.
