"We gave away matches at 149, 157 and 174, and you're not going to win when you do that," Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan said. "The other guys did a great job, especially Joe Barczak, who keeps finding ways to win even though he's wrestling way out of his weight class. He's wrestling as hard or harder than anybody on our team right now."
The match started at heavyweight, where Pat Walker and Joseph Rizqallah wrestled a scoreless first period. Walker started down in the second and gave up a three-point near-fall before escaping 13 seconds later. Rizqallah shot in a got a takedown with 10 seconds left in the first period to go up 5-1 after five minutes. Rizqallah started down in the third and escaped quickly, then was warned for stalling with 21 seconds left in the bout. Walker shot in and scored with 15 seconds left, but the deficit was too much as Rizqallah added the riding-time for a 7-3 win.

Olanowski escaped before the period ran out and he started down in the second. Arlis chose a neutral start to the third period and got a takedown in 36 seconds before cutting Olanowski loose. He scored another takedown with 28 seconds left in the match, but he couldn't get the turn and the Spartan took the 8-6 win to put MSU up 6-0.
No. 8 B.J. Futrell scored early and often against true-freshman Chris Lyon at 133, racking up a 24-9 technical fall with 48 seconds left in the match. Futrell scored 10 takedowns - six in the first period - and added a pair of two-point near-falls for the technical fall.

Michigan State freshman Sean McMurray notched a takedown 1:05 into his bout with Illini freshman Jackson Morse and Morse escaped 43 seconds later. The duo ended the period on their feet and Morse started down in the second. After a pair of cautions against McMurray, Morse escaped in 19 seconds. But the Spartan nailed a takedown with 46 seconds left and put Morse on his back for the fall in 4:20, pushing MSU's lead to 15-8.

Jacobs started down in the third and escaped after 34 seconds, cutting Friedl's lead to 5-4, and the Illini senior was hit with a stalling warning with 52 seconds remaining. He couldn't fend off all of Jacobs' attacks as the Spartan notched a takedown with 14 seconds showing on the clock and rode Friedl out for the 6-5 win, pushing MSU ahead 18-12.

Joe Barczak and Tyler Dickenson wrestled through a scoreless first period at 197 and the Spartan started down in the second.
