After No. 3 Wisconsin won five consecutive matches to take a 19-15 lead over No. 15 Illinois, Daryl Thomas wrestled with great purpose and came away with a 25-9 technical fall that gave the Illini a 19-19 tie at the UW Field House on Sunday. It was a four-point technical fall because Thomas was never able to earn near-fall points in the bout, but it was enough to tie the match between a pair of shorthanded Big Ten squads. It was Illinois' first tie since equaling the Badgers, 15-15, on Feb. 19, 2006.
"Daryl did a really good job of wrestling hard and getting us the tie," Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan said. "He almost got overanxious in the first period trying to do too much, but once he realized he had seven minutes to get it done, I thought he did well."
Illinois had No. 3 Jimmy Kennedy (141), No. 12 Jordan Blanton (174) and Mario Gonzalez (197) sidelined by injuries, while Wisconsin was without No. 7 Cole Schmitt (149), No. 2 Andrew Howe (165) No. 19 Ben Jordan (174) and No. 2 Trevor Brandvold (197). The Badgers forfeited at 149 because Schmitt feeling ill Sunday morning, while Howe started his match against Conrad Polz but a cramp forced him to injury default.
The dual started at 149 and No. 12 Eric Terrazas accepted a forfeit because No. 7 Cole Schmitt became ill Sunday morning and the Badgers weren't able to get a back-up ready in time. At 157, Jackson Morse scored the first takedown, but Wisconsin's Shawn Perry escaped and managed the next takedown before riding out Morse for the 3-2 lead after a period. Morse starts down in the second and escapes, but Perry notched a takedown and rode him out for the 5-3 lead. Perry started down in the third and escaped before scoring again. Morse escaped but couldn't mount a late rally as Perry added the riding-time point for the 9-4 decision, cutting Illinois' margin to 6-3.
Conrad Polz and No. 2 Andrew Howe began their match at 165 but Howe suffered an injury and had to default, giving Polz the injury default victory and pushing Illinois' lead to 12-3.
Ben Friedl scored first at 174 against Kalvin York and rode him for about 30 seconds before the Badger escaped. Friedl was penalized for fleeing the mat, tying the score 2-2, and he nearly got a takedown just before the end of the period but it wasn't awarded. Friedl started down in the second and escaped 13 seconds into the period and he hit a takedown with 50 seconds left in the period. He rode out York for the 5-2 lead after five minutes. York started down in the third and escaped after Friedl rode him for much of the period, bringing within 5-3. York got a takedown in the final seconds, but Friedl added the riding-time point for the 6-5 win, extending the Illini lead to 15-3.
Joe Barczak faced off against No. 4 Travis Rutt at 184 to allow Tony Dallago to wrestle up at 197, and Rutt scored a takedown a minute into the bout. He rode Barczak out and the Illini senior started down in the second. Barczak escaped and the pair ended the period on their feet. Rutt started down in the third and escaped, and neither managed to score late in the bout with Rutt taking a 4-1 win after adding the riding-time point, bringing Wisconsin within 15-6.
At 197, Dallago stepped up a class in place of an injured Mario Gonzalez and gave up a takedown to Derrick Borlie with just under a minute left in the first period. He rode out Dallago and started down in the second, scoring a reversal when Dallago's attempt to turn him loosened up for a 4-0 lead. Dallago escaped and the period ended with the pair on their feet. Dallago started down and escaped, but Borlie scored a takedown on the edge to go up 6-2. Borlie cut Dallago loose and finished another takedown on the edge before cutting Dallago loose again. He added the riding-time point and took a 9-4 decision over Dallago to cut Illinois' lead to 15-9.
Pat Walker squared off against No. 18 Eric Bugenhagen at heavyweight and the pair wrestled at neutral the entire period. Bugenhagen started down in the second after Walker deferred and he escaped off the whistle. Neither wrestler scored again in the period and Bugenhagen took a 1-0 lead to the third. Walker started down in the third and nearly escaped off the whistle but the Badger flattened him out. Walker got to his feet twice but Bugenhagen ran him out of bounds both times. Bugenhagen was warned for stalling with 33 seconds left and Walker escaped 10 seconds later, tying the score 1-1, but Begenhagen fended off Walker's late attacks and added the riding-time point for the 2-1 win to cut Illinois' lead to 15-12.
Logan Arlis nearly got a takedown after getting in deep on a waistlock, but Kelliher sidled out of bounds for the neutral restart. Off the restart, Kelliher hit the slide-by to a single-leg and finished it for a takedown with 30 seconds left. He rode out Arlis for the 2-0 lead after the first period. Arlis chose neutral in the second then Kelliher started a scramble, scored the takedown and recorded a pair of three-point near-falls to go up 10-0. He rode out Arlis and chose top to start the third period. Kelliher rode out Arlis and added the riding-time point for the 11-0 major decision, giving the Badgers their first lead of the day, 16-15.
No. 7 B.J. Futrell and No. 3 Tyler Graff wrestled a scoreless first period and Futrell started down in the second. He nearly got out off the whistle but Graff kept an ankle and flattened him out. Futrell nearly kicked out after a turn attempt by Graff but the Badger kept an ankle and regained his hold. Futrell was warned for stalling near the end of the period as Graff rode him out. Graff started down in the third and Futrell let him escape, giving Graff a 1-0 lead. Graff got a single and finished it for the takedown before cutting him loose. Futrell got in on a double-leg but Graff shrugged him off. After a half-shot by Graff, Futrell countered and got the takedown on the edge, tying the bout 3-3 with 58 seconds left. He cut Graff loose and Graff was warned for stalling after another shot by Futrell. But Futrell took a late shot, Graff blocked it and circled around for the decisive takedown by a 7-3 win after adding the riding-time point, pushing the Badgers up 19-15.
At 141, Daryl Thomas once again took to the mat in place of Kennedy against Danny Arnel. Thomas got a leg and circled behind for the first takedown. Arnel escaped but Thomas continued to force the action and got a stalling warning called on Arnel. Thomas got a slide-by off a tie-up for another takedown and rode out Arnel for a 4-1 lead after three minutes. Arnel started down in the second and Thomas cut him loose after a few seconds, looking for a possible bonus-point victory. Thomas hit a single-leg and finished it for the takedown before cutting him loose. Off a restart, Thomas hit a sweep single-leg for a takedown and cut Arnel loose again for an 8-4 lead. He had another slide-by for a takedown, cut Arnel loose and got a takedown on the edge for a 12-5 lead. Thomas cut him loose again and notched another takedown off a slide-by to go up 14-6 late in the period. Arnel got hit with a stalling point to put Thomas up 15-6 after two periods. Thomas chooses neutral in the third and shoots off the whistle for a double-leg takedown and a 17-6 lead. Thomas cut him loose and hit another double-leg for a 19-6 lead with 1:25 left in the bout. Needing a near-fall for the five-point technical fall, Thomas cut him loose and got the quick takedown to go up 22-8 with a minute left in the match. Arnel gave up another stalling point before cutting Arnel loose and getting the decisive takedown to seal the technical fall, 25-9. But since Thomas never scored any near-fall points, it was a four-point tech fall as the Illini tied the Badgers 19-19.
The Illini return to Huff Hall for a pair of duals next week, hosting SIU Edwardsville Friday at 7 p.m. and Minnesota Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home meets this season.
