The Illini women's tennis team continued its fall schedule at the UNLV Invitational, Sept. 24-26, taking on opponents from Illinois State, Northern Arizona, UNLV and Texas. Sophomore Rachael White led the group for the second straight weekend, going 3-1 in singles to improve to 6-2 for the fall.
"This tournament was a great benchmark to see where our team is fitness-wise," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "The girls played in 100 degree heat all weekend and did not lose one match based on their conditioning level. The longer the matches went the more it favored us, which shows how hard the girls have been working with their fitness. Our doubles combinations looked strong all weekend and Rachael White continued to play top-level tennis for the second consecutive weekend."
In the final matches of the weekend on Sunday, White topped Caroline Larsson (UT), 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5), while junior Amy Allin defeated Edit Suhajda (NAU), 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, and senior Annie McCarthy came back to claim the Flight Two backdraw title with a win over Aimee Oki (NAU), 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Misia Kedzierski collected her first win as an Illini on Friday, rallying past Larsson, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. In doubles, each Illini tandem tallied two wins on the weekend.
Up Next: Junior Chelcie Abajian and sophomore Breanne Smutko will compete in doubles at the 2010 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 2-10. The duo earned a wild card into the qualifying draw, which runs Oct. 5-6, after finishing second at the 2010 ITA/USTA National Collegiate Summer Championships this past August.
