No. 13 Illinois is tied for the lead after 36 holes of the 25th Annual LA Classics Invitational in Lafayette, La. At -4, the Illini are tri-leaders with both Tulane and LSU. Individually, junior Scott Langley holds a four-shot lead after back-to-back-rounds of 68 at the 7,141-yard par 72 Oakbourne Country Club.
"Scott was a horse today," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "He competed well and has set himself up for a great finish tomorrow."
Illinois shot rounds of 284 and 288 for a total of 572. LSU had the big round of the day with an 11-under par 277 after a first round 295. Tulsa, meanwhile, shot rounds of 289 and 283.
Southeastern Louisiana is in fourth in the 15-team field at 580 followed by Houston in fifth at 587.
Other Illinois finishers include Matt Hoffman in 18th at even par 144 after a pair of 72 rounds. Sophomore Luke Guthrie has Illinois' other under-par round with a two-under par 70 in round one. Guthrie is tied for 24th at +2 (146) after shooting 76 in round two. Senior Zach Barlow (74-74-148) is tied for 33rd while junior Chris DeForest (77-74-151), last week's Big Ten Golfer of the Week, is tied for 45th.
Illinois held a three-stroke lead after Monday's morning round while Langley was the leader at -4. The Illini are looking for their third tournament title in six stroke-play events this season.
"For the first stroke play event of the spring, we had a good day," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We hit a little rough spot in the second round, otherwise we would have had a chance to pull away a bit. In order to have success tomorrow we need to play the par fives a little better. All in all, is was a good effort."
