Top seed and ninth-ranked Illinois fell in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Match Play Friday morning at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. The Illini dropped a 3.5-2.5 decision to eighth-seeded Purdue. The Illini were playing Indiana in a consolation bracket match during the afternoon, but play was suspended with six holes left to play. The winner of that match will play for fifth place Saturday afternoon. The loser will compete for seventh.
Against the Boilermakers, Illinois got wins from 24th-ranked Scott Langley at No. 1 and senior Matt Hoffman at No. 4. Langley downed Erich Johnston 4&3 while Hoffman defeated Tyler Duncan, 4&3. Chris DeForest halved his match with Maximo Kopp at No. 5. Purdue's William Sjaichudin defeated Luke Guthrie 5&3 at No. 2; the Boilers' Bomm Ratanakul defeated Zach Barlow 3&2 at No. 3 and David Gersztein won 2&1 over Illinois' Ross Frankenberg at No. 6.
Saturday's semifinals will feature Purdue vs. Minnesota and Iowa vs. Northwestern.
"We're going to get everybody's best, so we need to learn how to be the hunted," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We didn't get off to a great start, but it's early and we'll learn from this."
