URBANA, Ill. - Illini sophomore KU Singh was the winner of the 2010 Car-X Men's Open Tennis Tournament held Dec. 3-6 at Atkins Tennis Center. Any male was able to enter the USTA-sanctioned open tournament and eligible players (non-college and prospective student-athletes) played for $1,500 in prize money.
Singh, who was seeded third in the tournament, took down a trio of Illini on his way to the finals. He topped current teammates No. 7 Connor Roth, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 5 Dennis Nevolo, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, before holding off No. 6 Marek Czerwinski in the championship match, 7-6 (12), 4-6, 7-5.
Eight Illini in all advanced to at least the quarterfinals, as players with Illinois connections comprised the majority of the draw. All but one current Illini, Brian Alden, competed in the tournament, and were joined by top-seeded former All-American Ryler DeHeart, recent signee Tim Kopinski, current men's volunteer assistant coach Scott Denenberg and team manager Riley Hoff-Larocca.
Illinois will open the spring season next month with the Illini Open, Jan. 13-16 in Sarasota, Fla.
