Final Team Scores and Brackets
LAS VEGAS -
No. 2 Jimmy Kennedy finished third at 141 pounds, bouncing back from a semifinal defeat with a pair of 14-4 major decision wins, and No. 19 B.J. Futrell out-performed his No. 10 seed by finishing fourth at 133 to help the Illini take fifth place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. No. 11 seed Eric Terrazas (149), No. 9 seed Tony Dallago (184) and No. 9 seed Mario Gonzalez also out-paced their seeds as Terrazas finished fifth, Dallago was sixth and Gonzalez took seventh. Jordan Blanton also battled through the consolation bracket to take fifth.
"We had a solid tournament and we are steadily improving," Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan said. "Overall, I think we competed hard and showed signs of being able to wrestle with some of the top guys in the country. The attitude of our team is very good and they are doing the necessary things to progress as the year goes on."
Futrell wrestled well on Saturday, starting the day with a 6-5 win over West Virginia's Nathan Pennesi before pinning sixth-ranked and fourth-seeded Scotti Sentes (Central Michigan) in 1:28. Futrell gained momentum from that, topping No. 7 and fifth-seeded Devin Carter (Virginia Tech) by a 12-11 margin in the consolation semifinals. But he dropped a 10-4 decision to Hofstra's eighth-ranked and sixth-seeded Lou Ruggirello in the third-place match to finish fourth.
Kennedy started the day by being pinned by No. 3 and second-seeded Kellen Russell of Michigan in 1:16, but he bounced by beating Hofstra's Vicente Varela 14-4 and Virginia Tech's Chris Diaz 14-4 to take third place.
Terrazas dropped his first two matches of the day, 8-3, to No. 7 and second-seeded Corey Jantzen (Harvard) in the semifinals, and a 4-3 decision to Virginia Tech's No. 11 and fifth-seeded Brian Stephens in the consolation semifinals. But he rebounded by defeating UNC Greensboro's Ivan Lopouchanski for the second time in the tournament, this time by an 8-4 score, to place fifth.
Blanton started the day with a 14-3 major decision over Navy's Matt Demichiel before dispatching Ohio State's 11th-seeded Nick Heflin by a 4-2 margin. He dropped a 2-0 decision to Oklahoma's seventh-ranked and fourth-seeded Tyler Caldwell, but recovered with a 5-4 win over tenth-seeded Jacob Swartz of Boise State in sudden-victory, avenging his quarterfinal loss to Swartz.
Dallago also started strong on Saturday, scoring a 10-2 major decision over Harvard's Cameron Croy and notching a 10-9 win over Navy's No. 12 and fourth-seeded Luke Rebertus in tiebreaks. But he fell short in tiebreaks to UNC Greensboro's Andrew Saunders by a 5-4 score. And Dallago ran out of steam in the fifth-place match, dropping a 20-8 major decision to No. 13 and fifth-seeded Erich Schmidtke (Oklahoma).
Gonzalez started the day with a first-period pin of Boise State's Matt Casperson but dropped a 5-4 decision to Cal State Bakersfield's Riley Orozco. He then beat Drexel's Brandon Palik 7-4 to claim seventh place.
The Illini have next week off from competition because of final exams but return to action on Sunday, Dec. 19, when they open Big Ten action against Purdue at Huff Hall at 1 p.m.
