EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 2 Jimmy Kennedy and No. 5 B.J. Futrell advanced to the semifinals of the Midlands Championships and two other Illini remain alive in the consolation bracket as Illinois stands in 14th place after day one of the tournament at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Kennedy scored a pair of major decisions at 141 pounds, while Futrell scored a technical fall and two decisions to reach the semifinals at 133.

Kennedy drew a bye in the first round because of the unbalanced bracket at 141, then made short work of Missouri's Cody Farinella in the second round, 9-1, and took down Northern Illinois' Tristen DeShazar with an 11-2 major decision. DeShazar had already pinned the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds in his two previous matches in 48 seconds total. Kennedy will face Iowa State's No. 15 and fifth-seeded Chris Drouin in Thursday's semifinals.

Futrell also fared well on the first day, scoring an 18-3 technical fall over Iowa State's Ben Cash in the first round before notching an 8-5 win over Clarion's Joe Waltko. He followed that up with a 5-2 win over Oklahoma's seventh-seeded Jordan Keller to reach the semifinals, where he'll face Iowa's No. 8 and third-seeded Tony Ramos.

Fourth-seeded Eric Terrazas at 149 and 12th-seeded Conrad Polz at 165 are the only other remaining attached wrestlers for the Illini, as unattached Jackson Morse at 157 also is in the consolation bracket. Terrazas dropped an 11-4 pigtail decision to Minnesota's unattached Dylan Ness before rattling off four straight wins in the consolation bracket. He'll face Missouri's Kyle Bradley in his next match after defeating the Tiger 7-2 at the teams' dual on Nov. 12. He needs to defeat Bradley in order to guarantee himself a placing finish.

Polz fell to Iowa's Aaron Janssen, 5-4, in the first round, before fighting back with two major decisions and a major upset over Oklahoma's No. 7 and third-seeded Tyler Caldwell, 3-2 in tiebreaks. Caldwell had been ranked at 174 after earning All-America status at 165 a year ago. He is returning to the 165-pound weight class beginning with Midlands.

Morse has been impressive at Midlands, scoring a 9-2 win over Bucknell's Brantley Hooks in the first round before running into the buzzsaw that is post-collegiate wrestler and top-seeded Jake Patacsil. The former Purdue star notched a 16-0 technical fall over the redshirting Illini at the end of the first period. But Morse bounced back with a 12-5 win over Rutgers' Nick Visicaro in the consolation second round before pinning Cal Poly's Barret Abel in 2:20. He'll face Pittsburgh's Donnie Tasser, who defeated fellow Illini Kyle Dooley, 11-4, in the first round of Midlands.

Senior Ben Friedl had a solid day at 174, pinning Southern Illinois' Rich Tado in 1:34 in the pigtail before falling to No. 18 and 6-seed Alex Caruso (Rutgers), 1-0. He fought back with two overtime wins, including one over Northern Iowa All-American Jarion Beets, before bowing out of the tournament with a 6-4 loss to Michigan State's Curran Jacobs.

Senior Joe Barczak (184) went 2-2 on the day, while freshman Logan Arlis (125), junior Martin Smith (heavyweight) and sophomore Pat Walker (heavyweight) were 1-2. Sophomore Kyle Dooley (157), junior Jake Beechy (157), junior Dan Stelter (174) and No. 13 and seventh-seeded Tony Dallago (184) all went 0-2 on the day.
