LAS VEGAS - No. 2 Jimmy Kennedy and Eric Terrazas advanced to the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and five other Illini remain alive in the consolation bracket to lift the Illini into sixth place after day one of the tournament at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Kennedy earned a pair of major decisions and a decision at 141 pounds, while Terrazas scored a technical fall and three decisions - including two upsets of higher-seeded wrestlers - to steamroll to the semifinals at 149.

The Illini had an impressive first session of the day, ending the first two rounds and first two consolation rounds in seventh place. Seven wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals and freshman 125-pounder Logan Arlis remained alive in the consolation bracket. No. 19 and 10th-seeded B.J. Futrell (133) started the tournament with a pin in 50 seconds before upsetting No. 12 and seventh-seeded Ian Paddock (Ohio State), 9-4. Second-ranked and third-seeded Jimmy Kennedy scored a pair of major decisions to reach the quarters at 141. No. 11 seed Eric Terrazas (149) scored a technical fall in the pigtail round before notching a pair of decisions, including an upset of No. 14 and sixth-seeded Brandon Rader (West Virginia) in the second round. Kyle Dooley (157) dropped his first two matches of the day to bow out of the tournament, but ninth-seeded Conrad Polz (165) started the tournament strong with a pair of victories. He beat Purdue's Kyle Mosier, 7-4, before upsetting No. 8 seed Tejovan Edwards of Arizona State, 10-5, in the second round.

No. 5 and second-seeded Jordan Blanton cruised through the first two rounds at 174 with an 11-8 win over Columbia's Stephen West and a 17-4 major decision over Drexel's Justin Wieller. Ninth-seeded Tony Dallago (184) ran through his first two bouts in only 7:15 thanks to two pins, including a fall over the No. 8 seed, Matt Ryan (West Virginia). Ninth-seeded Mario Gonzalez (197) earned a pair of two-point wins, including a 6-4 victory over eighth-seeded Keldrick Hall (Oklahoma). At heavyweight, No. 11 seed Pat Walker won his first match, 6-0, before being pinned by No. 16 and sixth-seeded Atticus Disney (Cal Poly) and dropping his consolation match to be eliminated from the tournament.

In the evening session, Futrell dropped a 14-9 decision to Wisconsin's third-ranked and second-seeded Tyler Graff before Kennedy topped No. 10 and sixth-seeded Michael Mangrum of Oregon State, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals. Terrazas then pulled off one of the tournament's biggest upsets on the first day, notching a 3-2 win over No. 12 and third-seeded Ivan Lopouchanski (UNC Greensboro) to punch his ticket to the semifinals.

But the rest of the quarterfinal round wasn't as fruitful for the Illini, as Polz dropped a 6-1 decision to top-ranked and top-seeded Andrew Howe (Wisconsin), Blanton fell to tenth-seeded Jacob Swartz of Boise State, Dallago lost to top-seeded and No. 4 Steve Bosak (Cornell), 8-1, and Gonzalez fell to top-seeded and second-ranked Cam Simaz (Cornell), 11-6.

Futrell, Polz, Blanton, Dallago and Gonzalez all will compete in the consolation round of 12 to start day two of the tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. Semifinal matches will begin at noon, with championship matches starting at 5 p.m.
