PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Illinois freshman forward Alexis Burke (Bainbridge, HS, Bainbridge, Ga.) has been named the Big Ten Conference Co-Freshman of the Week after a several of big games last week for the Fighting Illini, the league office announced today.
Burke averaged 14.3 points and 3.3 rebounds last week and scored in double digits in three games en route to Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week laurels. Burke scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled in four rebounds in the Illini's 104-63 win over Cal Poly on Monday before recording 18 points and six rebounds in a 69-48 win over Long Beach State on Friday. The newcomer posted her second 18-point effort of the week, nailing 4-of-6 from behind the arc against No. 14 North Carolina to clinch All-Tournament Team honors at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
Burke shares Freshman of the Week honors with Penn State's Maggie Lucas, while Ohio State's Jantel Lavender was named the conference's Player of the Week.
The Fighting Illini return to action this Wednesday, Dec. 1 when they host NC State at Assembly Hall in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at 7:30 p.m. They'll then head out west to face Colorado in Boulder on Saturday in the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.
