PARK RIDGE, Ill. -
Illinois sophomore 157-pounder Kyle Dooley was named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Dooley upset No. 20 Dan Gonsor, 7-3, during No. 10 Illinois' dual against No. 11 Missouri in Edwardsville, Ill., on Friday. Two weeks earlier, Gonsor had pinned Dooley in the opening round of the Lindenwood Open.
Dooley set the tone early in the bout, earning a takedown just 12 seconds into the first period. He added another at the 1:26 mark to lead 4-2 after the first period. Dooley chose neutral to start the second period and the pair wrestled the entire two minutes without scoring. In the third, Gonsor chose top position and Dooley escaped with 27 seconds left in the period before scoring another takedown six seconds later. Dooley gave up a point for stalling but held on for the 7-3 victory, his first career win over a ranked opponent.
