Doubles Final
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In a battle down to the bitter end, the Illini doubles team of sophomore Rachael White and freshman Allison Falkin came up just short Monday in the title match of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The tandem fell 9-7 to Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton to finish runner-up in the tournament for the first time since 2004.
"I thought they played very well, even after a little bit of a slow start," assistant coach Georgia Rose said. "After getting down 5-2 and 6-3, they were able to tie it at six-all and fought hard. Overall, it was a great tournament for them and I think if they work on some of the little things they will be very successful. Rachael's confidence and composure has improved and she's worked hard the last couple months, so it was nice to see that pay off for her."
The Illini will close out their fall season at home in two weeks when they host the Midwest Blast, Nov. 5-7, at Atkins Tennis Center. The tournament will feature players from Memphis, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.
