ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Several Illini were victorious at day two of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan, as junior Amy Allin earned a bid into the singles main draw, while sophomore Rachael White and freshman Allison Falkin advanced to the third round of doubles.
In the final round of qualifying play earlier today, Allin topped Michigan's Kari Wig, 6-3, 6-1 to secure a spot in the main draw, while Falkin was edged by Ohio State's Noelle Malley, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
In doubles, Falkin and White received a first-round bye into the second round, before defeating Carolina Salas Espinosa and Amanda Cornwell of Detroit, 8-5. Allin and senior Annie McCarthy also received a first-round bye, but fell to No. 5-8 seed Michelle Sulahian and Sam Critser of Michigan, 8-5.
Allin will begin singles play on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT and will face Gabby Steele of Ohio State, while White, who earned an automatic into the main draw and is seeded No. 5-8, received a first-round bye and will face the winner of Margarita Sadovnikova (Youngstown State) and Kelsey Haviland (Ohio State). Junior Chelcie Abajian had also earned an automatic bid into the main draw, but was forced to withdraw due to illness.
The six-day tournament features players from Michigan, Akron, Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit-Mercy, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, IPFW, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
