Illinois won an NCAA leading seven tournament titles in 2008-09. One that eluded the Illini a season ago was the season-opening Wolf Run Invitational, where the Illini placed second. However, heading into Sunday's final round, Illinois holds an 11-shot lead in the 17-team field. In addition, junior Scott Langley posted rounds of 68 and 66 on the 7,195-yard Wolf Run course to lead the tournament individually.
Illinois, ranked 12th in the AVCA poll and sixth in the just released Golfweek preseason poll, posted rounds of 281 and 282 to lead the tournament at five-under par 563. North Florida, which had a one-stroke lead after Saturday morning's first round, is in second at 574 followed by UCF (575), Penn State (584), Tulsa (584) and Iowa State (584).
Individually, Langley, searching for his fourth collegiate tournament title, holds a one-stroke lead over North Florida's Sean Dale at -8. Illinois sophomore Luke Guthrie (70-71-141) and senior Zach Barlow (70-72-142) are tied for seventh and ninth, respectively. Freshman Ross Frankenberg (146), playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot back-to-back 73s and is tied for 20th at +4 with senior Matt Hoffman tied for 39th at +8 (150).
