Champaign, Ill. -
Illinois forward Mike Davis suffered a broken left ankle during a voluntary workout this morning at the Ubben Basketball Complex. His recovery is expected to take 6-8 weeks. Because of the injury, Davis has withdrawn from next week's USA Basketball World University Game Team Trials.
"I am disappointed for Mike because I know how hard he's been working and how much he was looking forward to USA Basketball tryouts and the chance to represent his country," Illinois Head Coach Bruce Weber said. "But with adversity comes opportunity, and while he won't be able to participate in basketball activities for a while, he will be able to get in the weight room and work on adding weight and increasing his strength. Mike is a motivated young man and I'm confident he will make the most of this situation."
Davis was a second-team All-Big Ten and USBWA All-District 5 selection last season, and also earned Big Ten All-Tournament Team honors. He started all 34 games as a sophomore, ranking second on the Illini in scoring with an average of 11.3 points while shooting better than 53 percent from the field. He led Illinois and was second in the Big Ten in rebounding, averaging 8.1 boards, and topped the conference with nine double-doubles on the season.
