Delray Beach, Fla. -
Illinois will take a five-stroke lead into Sunday's final round of the FAU Spring Break Invitational in Delray Beach, Fla. The Illini are at +1 through 36 holes, bettering a 14-team field that includes six Big Ten teams. Sophomore Scott Langley (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South H.S.), looking for his third tournament title of his young career, leads the field individually at -7 135 at the Par 71 Gleneagles Country Club.
"Scott has been steady all weekend," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "He didn't make as many putts as he did yesterday, but he's been patient and played the course."
On Friday, Langley fired a 65 and freshman Luke Guthrie (Quincy, Ill./Quincy H.S.) shot 66 as the Illini shot seven-under 277 as a team. Saturday's conditions were a little tougher as the Illinois scored a 292. Northwestern is in second place at +6 followed by Michigan (+9), Ohio State (+11), Eastern Michigan (+13), and Wisconsin (+17).
"We didn't play as well today," Small said. "The course played a little tougher and we had to count scores we are not accustomed. Hopefully we'll able to regroup a little bit on Sunday."
Langley has just one bogey through 36 holes and posted birdies on the 542-yard par five seventh hole and 395-yard par four ninth today. Guthrie shot a five-over par 76 on Saturday, but is in a tie for fifth overall at even par 142. Sophomore Chris DeForest shot 35 on the back nine en route to a one-over par 72. He is in a tie for ninth overall at +1 143, giving the Illini three players in the top ten.
Juniors Matt Hoffman (+7) shot 74 and Zach Barlow (+9) shot 76 to sit in a tie for 40th and 52nd, respectively.
Freshman Mason Jacobs, playing as an individual, had the second best round by any of the competitors on the day with a two-under par 69 and was just one of six players to break par on Saturday. He had five birdies on the day and shot 33 on the back nine. Jacobs is tied for 17th overall at +3. Junior Clayton Parkhill shot 76 on Saturday and is tied for 69th at +13.
Illinois will be seeking its fourth team title of the 2008-09 season on Sunday.
