No. 6 Illinois is playing its final fall tournament in our 50th state and while the waves off the coast of Oahu may be choppy and good for surfing, the play of the Illini was steady. Illinois finished the day in a tie for fourth in the 12-team Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.
Three Illinois players shot even par 72 and three others shot two-over par 74s on the 7,218-yard Arnold Palmer Course. The second round will be on that course on Tuesday with the third and final round at the George Fazio Course on Wednesday.
"We didn't hurt ourselves today, but at the same time, we didn't have our best," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We lost too many shots around the green and have to tidy things up tomorrow. "We're a blue collar team and need to play a little more confidently."
Illinois had a lot of pars on the day. Sophomore Luke Guthrie is tied for 13th along with teammates Chris DeForest and Matt Hoffman. The trio combined for 43 pars in the round. Junior Scott Langley had a similar day with 16 pars en route to a 74. Langley is tied with teammates senior Zach Barlow and freshman Ross Frankenberg for 26th. Frankenberg is playing as an individual this week.
Illinois and the rest of the field is chasing San Diego State, a team that is second in those receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll. The Aztecs shot -10 and have the three leading individuals in Johan Carlsson (-5), Alex Kang (-4) and Andrew Cooley (-2). Long Beach State is second in the team chase at -3 followed by host Hawaii (E), and Illinois and Santa Clara at +2.
