EVANSTON, Ill. - The Illini women's tennis team advanced all three pairs of doubles teams earlier today at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Northwestern University, while freshman Breanne Smutko defeated Hannah Berner (Wisconsin), 6-2, 6-1 to qualify for the singles main draw.
After receiving first-round byes, fifth-seeded Chelcie Abajian and Rachael White topped Taylor Fournier and Kari Wig (Michigan), 8-6, while Leigh Finnegan and Marisa Lambropoulos knocked off Katya Mirnova and Hannah Berner (Wisconsin), 8-5. Megan Fudge and Breanne Smutko won their first-round match, 8-6 over Kirsten Gambrell and Cali Gustafson (DePaul), before defeating Zara Harutyunya and Angelina Jogasuria (Akron), 8-5.
In Regional II action at the University of Illinois, the doubles duo of Amy Allin and Annie McCarthy posted victories over Jessica Buterbaugh and Kelly Donohue (Bradley), 8-0 and Ingrid Ballus and Yuka Kobayashi (IPFW), 8-3 to advance to the semifinals. Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg defeated Nicole Miller and Emily Regenold (Bradley), 8-1 before falling to Iowa's Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young, 9-7.
All four Illini were victorious in first-round singles play, as Stromberg topped Shannon Brooks (Eastern Illinois), 6-3, 6-2, Allin swept Kobayashi, 6-0, 6-0, McCarthy knocked off Raquel Vescovi (IPFW), 6-3, 6-4 and Minor defeated Brittni Fausett (Northern Illinois), 6-0, 6-2.
Doubles play resumes tomorrow morning at both sites, with singles set to follow in the afternoon.
