| Moderator: Hey everybody, Ryan has joined us already, so we're going to get going a bit early. Keep those great questions coming! |
| Jon Bailen(Champaign): What are the rules about talking to recruits who have already committed to other schools but have not yet signed? |
Ryan Squire: Jon, good question. The NCAA doesn't have any rules about continuing contact with a recruit that has verbally committed. Most coaches, especially within the Big Ten, will respect other schools' verbal commitments. Depending, of course, on the messages the recruit has given coaches. |
| Chad (Chicago): What are the differences between working in the Big Ten and the Mid-American Conference? |
Ryan Squire: Chad, there are two big differences. One is level of staffing. We have five people in our compliance office at Illinois, whereas at Bowling Green I was a one-man shop. But the other side of that is that you don't necessarily face the same level of scrutiny in recruiting issues or media attention in the MAC as you do in the Big Ten. |
| Dave (Rochester, NY): Does the NCAA serve schools with monetary penalties? If so, what is done with that money? |
Ryan Squire: Dave, yes, they do. Institutions that are penalized in major infractions cases will have to repay the money received from their participation in NCAA Championship events. Those penalties go back to the NCAA championship fund. |
| Byron (Monticello): What made you decide to return to Illinois? |
Ryan Squire: Great question, Byron! The chance to get back to the Big Ten level and to work at a place where I'm familiar with the coaches and staff members were big factors for me. And to work with an athletic director that I'm familiar with also played a large part in the decision. Illinois also has a great mix of top-tier academics and athletics, which is a big draw. |
| Will (Champaign): Why is Jeff Jordan ineligible for two games when he wasn't even on the team this summer? |
Ryan Squire: Will, it even took me by surprise. However, the NCAA rule applies from the time a student-athlete joins the basketball team to the time his eligibility is exhausted. Because Jordan had eligibility remaining, he was subject to the rule about summer tournaments. |
| Western Springs: If an outstanding freshmen at another D1 school want to leave and then transfer to Illinois, what would be his restrictions on coming in? should he leave at the end of season or end of school year |
Ryan Squire: Western Springs, that is going to depend on a lot of factors. Generally, a student-athlete must sit out one year from competition when transferring between D-I schools. However, there are exceptions depending on the sport and how long the student-athlete has been at their current school. Also, the student's academic record could affect his or her transfer eligibility. |
| Western Springs: can an aau coach be hired at the same school that his former player went to? and if he can't how long is the restriction on hiring him? |
Ryan Squire: Western, another great and timely question! The NCAA just this month has proposed legislation that would restrict NCAA basketball programs from hiring any coach or other individual who is affiliated with a basketball recruit. The rule is likely to go into effect this summer if it passes. |

| Craig - Chicago: Are there any rules and regulations for relatives of a student /athlete? We are Alums, I Fund contributors and season ticket holders for FB & BB but these are not our relative's sport) Our 1st cousin's child (2nd cousin)will be on scholarship, can we take the student athlete out to dinner when we are on campus? Can we include a teammate or roommate? What are our limitations? Thanks |
Ryan Squire: Craig, that's quite the complex question! Generally you should be careful when providing benefits to any student-athlete. However, in this case it sounds like you have a pre-existing family relationship with the student-athlete in question. If that is the case, you could continue to provide meals and similar benefits to the student-athlete in the same way that you did before he or she became an athlete at Illinois. |

| Scott, 29 Palms, Ca: Ryan, What is the hardest part of your job? |
Ryan Squire: Scott, I would say that there are a lot of things about my job that are challenging. One is just knowing the rules and keeping up on them as they change and evolve. We have a 419-page NCAA manual that is always changing, so it's a lot to keep up with. The other main challenge is that we have to report violations if they happen on our campus and sometimes that can make it difficult to have good relationships with coaches. But we work hard to be a resource to our staffs and not just a traffic cop, and our coaches are generally very good to work with in this area. |
| Western Springs: can a player go from naia,d3,back to naia.? can he leave the d3 in Jan. then go to naia an play second semester? |
Ryan Squire: Western, great question, but it's not really in my area of expertise. That student-athlete would need to contact the compliance office at the prospective school. |
| Elizabeth (Columbus, Ohio): How do you manage to keep all of the numerous NCAA rules straight? |
Ryan Squire: Elizabeth, I study the NCAA manual a lot and also the NCAA and the Big Ten provide us with educational seminars and conferences to help us keep up on the rules as they change. It isn't always easy, but we work hard to know the rules better than anyone in the country! |
Ryan Squire: Thanks for all of the great questions and feel free to give us a call in the compliance office to discuss any specific situations. It's great to be back at Illinois! |
| Moderator: That's it for today's chat, but come back next Tuesday for another Lunchtime Chat! |
