Lacing Up with Lacey // Jan. 23, 2009

This semester, junior Lacey Simpson will be writing a weekly blog to keep Fighting Illini fans up-to-date on what's going on behind-the-scenes. In the first installment of "Lacing Up," Simpson talks about all the change that happened this past week.

----------------

On Tuesday I was wakened by a series of bells ringing from the alarm on my phone. The time read 5:30 AM and for a second I wondered why I set an alarm for so early. Then I realized that we had our first morning practice from 6:45-9:30 AM. I wasn't sure as to how the morning practice was going to be after looking at sleepy watery eyes and suffering from the blows of yet another loss. I must admit things started off a little shaky in the beginning but we regrouped and picked things up. I was proud of my teammates because of the energy and competitiveness that was brought into practice. It allowed me to know that we haven't thrown in the towel yet. We still believe, we understand that there are still more games to be played, but most importantly, we understand that there's still time to make a "change".

Speaking of "change" Tuesday was the first day of my internship for the Public Relations Department. No longer will I have to sit in boring lectures or write long 10-paged essays or study for exams...I am a working woman now and it feels good. I believe that this is going to be a great experience for me and I'm eager to soak it all in and learn as much as I possibly can.

I also got the opportunity to watch another "change" in the world this week. Tuesday I watched the inauguration of President Barack Obama. I must say watching this brought tears to my eyes because I was so proud that this man has come so far in life and can now say that he is the President of The United States of America. It was a beautiful sight to see people of all colors come together and be apart of the celebration. I was happy because I could say that I was a part of this change because, for the first time, I actually got out and voted. I felt like I made a difference and it was such a good feeling to have.

So I guess this was a week of change for me. I realize that in life you must make changes when things are not going the way you want them to go. I believe that in order for this season to end on more of a positive note we are going to have to make a change. And I believe that we are trying to make a change and at the end of the day that's what keeps me going. I use it as a fuel to keep working hard and focus on the things that my team needs for us to get better. So keep fighting ladies...keep believing!!!
