HONOLULU, Hawaii -
Former Illini pitcher Scott Shaw was added to the roster of the Honolulu Sharks in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League, joining fellow former Illini Lars Davis on the islands. Davis is splitting the catching duties for the Sharks and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in Honolulu's 7-2 win over the Waikiki BeachBoys on Sunday. Shaw has yet to make his debut for the Sharks, as the team had an off-day Monday.
Shaw had a stellar campaign in the short-season New York-Penn League for the Brooklyn Cyclones, going 6-3 in 14 starts with a 2.80 ERA. He pitched a team-high 74 innings, allowing 23 earned runs on 66 hits and just 15 walks while striking out 79. He had an excellent rate of 1.09 walks and hits per innings pitched and was named the NYPL Pitcher of the Week on Aug. 25 after tossing 6 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks against the Lowell Spinners.
The Hawaii Winter Baseball League features players under contract with an organization from either Major League Baseball, Japan Professional Baseball or the Korea Baseball Organization, primarily from the double-A and single-A levels of the minor leagues. The Sharks begin their 40-game schedule on Sept. 27 and wrap up regular season play Nov. 15.
