OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Illinois men's tennis team concluded action this afternoon at the second annual Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill. The Orange and Blue picked up four singles wins and three doubles wins on the final day of competition. Sophomore Roy Kalmanovich, preseason No. 98, took home the Most Outstanding Player Award after going 3-0 in singles, including upset wins over Texas' No. 46 Olivier Sajous and Florida State's No. 47 Clint Bowles.
"I would like to give a huge thanks to Carol and Wayne Muskievicz for their outstanding hospitality this weekend," Illinois head coach Brad Dancer said. "This tournament was a first class event with all three teams having the opportunity to experience tremendously competitive matches. We competed very well at times and also saw areas of weakness where we need to improve on as we move forward this year."
The Illini started off the day nabbing three doubles wins with the Illini tandem of sophomore Abe Souza and junior Jordan Knue teaming up to knock off Texas' Rook Schellenberg and Josh Zavala, 8-5. Knue finished the weekend 6-1 in combined doubles and singles.
The Illinois sophomore duo of Calon Alpar and Connor Roth quickly dispatched the Florida State tandem of Chris Reiman and Michael O'Shea, 8-5. In singles Alpar picked up a victory over Jonah Kane-West (TEX) while Roth defeated Michael O'Shea (FSU),
In doubles, Most Outstanding Player Kalmanovich partnered up with sophomore Waylon Chin, defeating the Texas pair of Olivier Sajous and Jonah Kane-West, 8-5.
