OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Illinois men's tennis team got the second annual Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational off to a good start today on the clay courts at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club. The Illini nabbed five victories in singles play and four more in doubles, facing players from Florida State and Texas.
Junior Jordan Knue had an impressive start to the three-day tournament, going 2-0 in doubles and then notching a win in singles. Knue, along with partner Abe Souza, started the morning off with a 9-8 (3) win over the Texas duo of Josh Zavala and Jonah Kane-West. Following that match, Knue teamed up with sophomore Calon Alpar to take down the Florida State duo of Michael O'Shea and Chris Reiman, 8-2. In his final match of the day, the Western Springs, Ill., native needed three sets to polish off Rook Schellenberg of Texas, going 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The Fighting Illini tandem of junior Billy Heiser and freshman Ruan Roelofse went 2-0 in doubles on the day, notching an 8-4 victory over the Florida State duo of Clint Bowles and Chris Cloer. Heiser and Roelosfe then faced Miguel Reyes Varela and Olivier Sajous of the Texas Longhorns. The Illini pair took the match, 8-6, over the Longhorns.
Sophomore Waylon Chin and junior Meedo El Tabakh both grabbed their first wins of the fall season, with Chin battling through three sets with Jon Wiegand (TEX). After two lengthy tiebreakers in the first two sets, Chin prevailed in the third set to take the match, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (9), 6-3. El Tabakh, in his debut for the Orange and Blue, downed Micheal O'Shea (FSU), 6-1, 6-3.
In another grueling three set match, Illinois sophomore Connor Roth, facing off against Texas' Jonah Kane-West, dropped the first set tiebreaker, then stormed back, 6-2, 6-1, to take the win.
The Illini continue play tomorrow with matches beginning at approximately 9 a.m. and concluding at approximately 6 p.m. Admission to the Olympia Fields Invitational is free.
