DES MOINES, Iowa - Sophomore Michael Murray was Illinois' highest finisher of the day, placing fifth in the unseeded 1,500m.
Murray timed a personal-best 3 minutes, 53.47 seconds in the 1,500m, edging out teammate Jared Richardson who was sixth in 3:55.94.
Junior Andrew Zollner was off to a good start in the decathlon, finishing nine events before pulling out of the event with a minor injury. He scored the most points in the 110m hurdles (821), with a wind-aided time of 15.0. Zollner was also the decathlon's third finisher in the pole vault, with a height of 15 feet, 1 inch that scored him 790 points.
The Drake Relays continues on Friday at 8 a.m. with the start of the relays and field events. Illinois will run four relays tomorrow, including the 4x400m preliminaries. Live results can be found at www.drakerelays.org.
