URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois women's tennis team concluded the final day of competition at the 2008 Midwest Blast on Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center. The Illini compiled a 11-10 record in singles and a 3-6 ledger in doubles at the three-day tournament. Sophomore Leigh Finnegan, who went a perfect 3-0 in singles on the weekend, was named to the Midwest Blast All-Tournament team.
"We finished the fall on a high note with great competition on our home courts," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Finnegan had a breakthrough tournament and showed consistency in her performances throughout the entire weekend."
On the final day of the tournament, Finnegan took a three-set victory over Wichita State's Luftiana Budiharto, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
Freshman Chelcie Abajian picked up her second win of the weekend in a hard fought battle against Wichita State's Torrie Browning. Browning took the first set, before Abajian stormed back in the second set 6-1. In the third set, Abajian continued her domination, downing Browning 6-2 to take the victory.
Senior Shivani Davé grabbed another victory for the Illini. Davé ousted Anna Egorova of Wichita State in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
With the conclusion of the Midwest Blast, the Illinois women's tennis team closes action for the fall season. The Illini open their home schedule against Tennessee at the Atkins Tennis Center on Jan. 24 at 12 p.m. CT.
