West Lafayette, Ind. -
After a two-and-a-half-week break in the schedule, the Illini men's golf team returned to action today at the Boilermaker Invitational, held at the par 72, 7,338-yard Kampen Course on the campus of Purdue University. The original 54-hole tournament format has been shortened to 36 holes after frost and frigid temperatures pushed tee times back two hours, causing today's schedule to go from two rounds to one. Cold temps and strong winds led to high scores as the field battled the conditions, with no player shooting a below-par score on the day.
After carding a team score of 310 today, Illinois stands in fifth place in the 15-team field, which features eight Big Ten teams. Purdue is in first at 300, owning a 1-shot lead over Michigan State. MSU's Ryan Brehm is the individual leader at even-par.
Senior Patrick Nagle shot a 3-over-par score of 75 to lead the Illini today. Nagle is tied for fifth place out of 80 golfers in the field, just three shots off the lead. Freshman Matt Hoffman was one stroke behind Nagle, carding a 4-over-par 76 for the UI's second score.
Junior Mark Ogren posted a 79 for Illinois' third score, while senior Kyle Hosick and sophomore Jon Krick each carded 80s.
The second and final round of the Boilermaker Invitational will be held tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CDT.
