AUSTIN - The Illinois women's tennis team could not halt a strong Texas Longhorn squad, as it fell 7-0 today at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin. Beginning with a rough start in doubles, Illinois could not rebound against the Longhorns in singles, dropping to 3-8 on the season, while Texas improved to 6-6.

 

"Overall, it was a tough day," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "This is one of those matches that you just put behind you and hope that the team can have a quick turnaround for tomorrow's match against UTSA. Texas just outplayed us today."

 

Texas opened the match, which was delayed 30 minutes due to rain, with quick wins at No. 2 and 1 pairs en route to sweeping the doubles point of the match.

 

In singles, the story was not much better for the Illini, as freshman Megan Fudge fell for the first time since returning from injury at the No. 1 spot, and the remaining lineup was unable to dent the Texas stronghold on the contest.

 

Illinois retired two matches to open singles, as senior Emily Wang retired trailing 4-1 in the first set on court six, while freshman Kristina Minor suffered a minor roll of the ankle in the first set of her match on court five as she trailed 5-2 before retiring. In the face of a rough up-hill climb with the match score at 3-0 in favor of Texas, Illinois could not regroup to win the final four singles matches.

 

The Illini conclude their Lone Star State road trip with a match against Texas-San Antonio tomorrow, at 3 p.m., at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas.
