Quarterfinals
No. 3 UCLA 4, No. 6 Illinois 2
CHICAGO - Third-seeded UCLA beat No. 6 Illinois 4-2 in Saturday's quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club.
"I was very proud of our guys in the doubles," head coach Brad Dancer said. "We need to come out that strong in every match. In singles, first off, great job to UCLA. I think that we saw a UCLA team that was much better than us today."
Illinois (7-2) was looking to make its sixth straight semifinal appearance at this event. UI won the doubles point, but UCLA (7-1) bounced back in singles with wins from 2006 NCAA champ Ben Kohlloeffel, Philipp Gruendler, Chris Surapol and Michael Look. Look clinched the win at No. 6 singles. Ruben Gonzales provided the lone win in singles for Illinois.
The Bruins will be making their 15th trip to the semifinals at this event. The Fighting Illini captured back-to-back Team Indoor titles in 2003-04 and had lost in the semis each of the past two years.
Tonight's match featured the 2006 NCAA singles (Kohlloeffel) and doubles (Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe from Illinois) champions.
UCLA will face Ohio State at 3 pm in Saturday's semifinals. Illinois will face Baylor in a consolation match also at 3 pm.
