BOSTON - The Illinois women's tennis team carded another successful outing at the Harvard Invitational in Boston today. Overall, the Illini went 5-2 in singles to claim one of the squad's best performances in singles at a tournament this fall, as junior Shivani Davé, sophomores Megan Fudge and Kristina Minor and freshmen Annie McCarthy and Marisa Lambropoulos all notched wins in the second day of action.
"We had another solid performance across the board in singles today," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "Kristina Minor was a bright spot among many singles performances. She kept her composure and battled back after dropping the first set and played an outstanding third-set tie break."
Minor, despite a slow start, battled back from a set down to overcome Samantha Rosekrans of Harvard, 4-6, 7-5, 10-2, in her singles battle today. For Fudge, her match against Stephanie Schnitter of Harvard provided a tough test, but the Illini No. 1-singles player was victorious by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Davé also faced a formidable opponent in Eunice Lee of Harvard, but a determined Davé prevailed easily, 6-0, 6-2. Lambropoulos and McCarthy rounded out the Illini wins in singles for the day, as Lambropoulos downed Elizabeth Brook of Harvard (6-1, 6-4) and McCarthy upended Catriona Stewart of Harvard (6-3, 6-0).
For the Illini in doubles, a hard-fought effort by Fudge and sophomore partner Leigh Finnegan against Texas A&M's Tiffany Clifford and Christi Liles provided one of the most contested matches of the day, but the effort fell short in a 9-7 loss for Illinois. Overall Illinois went 0-4 in doubles on the second-day of action.
Play continues tomorrow at the Murr Center Tennis Courts, as the Illini continue with singles and doubles competition before wrapping up the three-day evetn.
