BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Illinois women's tennis team continued match play today at the Hoosier Classic being hosted on the campus of Indiana University. Overall, the Illini posted a 4-2 record in singles, receiving a strong effort from its freshmen class of Annie McCarthy, Candy Graetz and Marisa Lambropoulos, who all posted singles wins during today's action.
"It is very rewarding as coach when you see your players working on the right things and executing their game plan in competitive situations," head coach Michelle Dasso said. " Freshman Annie McCarthy was a great example of that today. She came through big in a tight three-set match by playing the type of tennis that she needs to play to get her to the next level. Annie stepped up to the challenge and beat a girl she had lost to two weeks ago at our first fall tournament by playing smart, yet solid, tennis."
Starting the afternoon's battles, McCarthy defeated Indiana's Erin Clark in a three-set thriller, 6-7(5), 6-3, 1-0(13), to win the consolation bracket in Singles Flight E.
Capping off the day, Graetz easily took down Yuka Kobayashi of Western Michigan, 6-0, 6-1, while Lambropoulos returned to the win column after a 6-2, 6-0, victory against Jennifer Barnes of Iowa.
Also joining the Orange and Blue freshmen in the win column was junior Shivani Davé, as she downed Yumi Matsuto of Western Michigan, 6-1, 6-4.
Rounding out the singles action, senior Momei Qu pushed her contest into a match tiebreak, but fell short in a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(7), loss to Katarina Kudlackova of Kansas State. In the final Illinois results, Christine Stromberg, after a strong start to her young Illini career as freshman walk-on, dropped her only singles match of the day to Amanda Moccia of Western Michigan, while senior Alejandra Meza Cuadra suffered a straight-sets setback to Katie Kilborn of Vanderbilt.
Despite the overall singles success, a tough day awaited U of I in doubles, as the Fighting Illini competed four different doubles teams, with each falling in their doubles tilts.
