BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Illinois women's tennis team closed the books on the opening day of the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington today. Heading into day two, freshman walk-on Christine Stromberg paces the effort as she went 2-0 in singles to jump-start her Illinois career on the right foot.
"Our newest addition, Christine Stromberg, had a solid performance in her first competition representing the Orange and Blue," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "She has not missed a beat since joining our squad and adds welcomed depth to our team."
Stromberg posted wins over Pauline Guemas of Indiana, 6-3, 6-1, and Mynee Rokuda of Kansas to kickoff her young Illini career with a bang.
Stromberg's fellow freshmen teammates Annie McCarthy and Candy Graetz had mixed results in their opening day, as they went 1-1 in their respective flights.
For McCarthy, a hiccup in the first round did not last long for the young Illini netter, as she rebounded to down Kayla Berry of Iowa, 6-1, 6-1, in her second match of the day.
"Annie McCarthy started off slowly in her first match, but rebounded nicely with a very good win over an experienced competitor from Iowa," Dasso said. "The more Annie plays, the better she gets."
Rounding out the day for the Illini, seniors Momei Qu and Alejandra Meza Cuadra and junior Shivani Davé all went 1-1. Qu's victory came against Jessica Young of Iowa, 6-4, 6-3, Meza Cuadra bageled Marie Caujolle of Indiana State, 6-0, 6-0, while Davé upended Emily Dudzik of Western Michigan, 6-2, 7-6(3). Marisa Lambropoulos posted an 0-2 record to close out the Illini day one results.
"I thought our overall performance on the opening day was mediocre," Dasso said. "Mediocrity is not a term I ever want associated with our program. We opened the tournament flat, which shows the need for increased intensity in our conditioning and practice time."
