CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois senior forward Ella Masar raked in two more weekly honors after her three-goal performance last weekend. Masar was named to the team of the week by Soccer Buzz and Soccer America after leading the Illini to back-to-back victories over Michigan and Michigan State.
Masar tallied two goals against Michigan on Friday as the Illini shutout the Wolverines, 2-0. The Urbana, Ill., native added her third goal of the weekend, 11th of the season, against Michigan State on Sunday to cap off Illinois' season with a 1-0 win over the Spartans. Masar surpassed her previous single-season high of nine goals, which she set last season. In addition, the senior forward's six-game winning goals this season and 12 in her career are second in the Illinois record book.
The honors mark the second time in Masar's career that she has been recognized by both organizations. The reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year was named to both teams of the week in October 2006 after scoring two goals in Illinois comeback victory over then-No. 9 Penn State.
Earlier this week, Masar also was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. It marked her third weekly conference award of the season, fourth of her career.
Masar and the Illini will take this weekend off before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Big Ten Tournament. Illinois has clinched a No. 3 seed and will face the No. 6 seed (to be determined) on Thursday, No. 8.
