Former Illinois goalkeeper Leisha Alcia (Mississauga, Ontario) was named to the Canadian Women's National Team earlier this week as a replacement for injured keeper Katrina Leblanc. She joins the World Cup Team as the Canadians prepare to qualify for the 2007 World Cup.
"One of the great challenges in life is to be prepared for the opportunity that you don't know is coming," Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. "This is one of those times and I am excited for Leish because she has trained and kept herself prepared and ready for this wonderful chance to represent her country."
Canada has played a pair of matches since Alcia joined the squad, fighting to two draws with China on Aug. 19 and 22. The Canadians next face France on Saturday in Rouen, France, and on Aug. 29 in Dieppe.
The Canadians will be part of the CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifying tournament in November in preparation for the 2007 World Cup in China. Alcia is currently an assistant coach at Western Kentucky and will return to the Hilltoppers on Sept. 1.
