SOUTH BEND, Ind. ­- The Illinois women's tennis team closed out the final day of the Eck Classic hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend on Sunday, Nov. 12. The event, headlined by junior Momei Qu's 3-0 singles record at the event, ends the fall season for the Illini.
"I was extremely pleased with Momei's performance this weekend," head coach Michelle Dasso said. "It is encouraging to see her finish the fall on a high note and be back playing the way she is capable of playing. "
Qu closed out a perfect weekend when she defeated Kirsten Gambrell of DePaul, 6-2, 6-0, in her final match of the weekend to win the singles title in the Gold Flight. On the day, Illinois finished 4-3 in singles play.
Continuing Illinois winning ways, Sophomore Shivani Davé ousted Ashley Moccia of Western Michigan, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Megan Fudge rebounded from her loss on Saturday, taking down Petra Rehusova of DePaul, 6-0, 6-1. In other action, Kali Krisik of Notre Dame downed freshman Kristina Minor, 6-2, 7-6, in a consolation match up.
Closing out Sunday's matches were junior Alejandra Meza Cuadra and senior Emily Wang. Meza Cuadra ended the night with a disappointing loss to Western Michigan's Emily Dudzik, 7-5, 7-5, while Wang could not overcome WMU's Noriko Saruta in her 6-0, 6-1 loss.
The Notre Dame Invitational, held at the Eck Tennis Center, closes out the fall season for the Illini who will return to action when they travel to Marquette on January 20 for their first dual match of the spring.
"We will be working hard in this time off to prepare for the spring," Dasso said. "What type of condition and shape the girls come back in at the start of our spring season in January, will be a testament to the girls individual work ethic and discipline over the next two months."
