SOUTH BEND, Ind. ­- The Illinois women's tennis team closed out the second day of competition at the Eck Classic in South Bend, struggling against the field on Saturday, Nov. 11. Junior Momei Qu remained a highlight for the Orange and Blue and she continued to roll, improving to 2-0 in singles at the event, while as a team the Illini went 2-4 in singles and 2-4 in doubles competition at the Eck Tennis Center on the campus of Notre Dame University.
The three-day event concludes on Sunday, Nov. 12, and includes competitors from DePaul, Illinois, Notre Dame and Western Michigan.
Qu opened the day on a high note, disposing of Priyanka Parekh of Western Michigan, 6-4, 7-6. Freshman Kristina Minor rounded out the Illini netters in the winning column by way of a retirement over Anja Mihaldine of DePaul, 6-3, 1-0, ret. In other freshman action, Leigh Finnegan had to retire to Katie Potts of Notre Dame, 6-2, 4-2, ret., while Megan Fudge lost in the semifinals of her flight to Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame, 7-5, 6-0.
Sophomore Shivani Davé had a rough day on the courts, winning the opening set of her contest against Kirsten Gambrell of DePaul before losing her hold on the match to fall 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out the Illinois scores in singles, Ashley Moccia of Western Michigan defeated Alejandra Meza Cuadra 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, the tandem of Fudge and Finnegan came up short in the semifinals against Moccia and Kerstin Pahl of WMU, losing 8-1. The freshmen duo, however, returned to form when they dismissed Parekh and Noriko Saruta of Western Michigan, 9-7, in consolation action.
Davé and Qu fell in both of their doubles tilts on the day, dropping their first contest to Gambrell and Petra Rehusova of DePaul, 8-2, before losing to Dunja Antunovic and Bojana Murisic of DePaul, 8-6. Meza Cuadra and Minor split their matches on Saturday, defeating Emily Dudzik and Milica Zivanovic of Western Michigan, 8-3, followed by a let down against Antunovic and Murisic, 8-2.
