CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Juniors Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe both ended their runs at the Polo Ralph Lauren/ITA All-American Championships, losing in the quarterfinals in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday afternoon. Anderson kept his match close, but top-seeded John Isner of Georgia prevailed in straight sets, while Rowe ran out of gas in his contest against No. 5-seeded Arnau Brugues of Tulsa.
The Illini duo's advancements in the main draw were personal bests for the netters, as Anderson fell in the first round in 2005 and Rowe was making his debut in the main bracket. Anderson is now 6-1 on the young season, while Rowe moved to 5-2 overall in singles.
Anderson, who held the first set on serve for most of the game, allowed Isner a key break to allow the Georgia netter to take the opening stanza 7-5. In the second set, Isner came up with multiple shots to keep Anderson out of the match, closing out the contest with a second-set 6-3 victory. In Rowe's tilt against the hometown favorite, a rocky start for the left hander easily handed Brugues a 6-0 first-set lead in the match. With a revitalized energy, Rowe pushed to Tulsa player for most of the final set, but was unable to send it to three as Brugues closed out the win in straights with a 7-5 closing set.
The Illini will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Midland, Texas to take part in the Racquet Club Tennis Invitational on Oct.13-15.
