MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Illinois men's tennis player sophomore Marc Spicijaric ousted No. 4-seeded Matko Maravic of Michigan in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-4, to advance into the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Minneapolis today. No. 21-seeded Spicijaric will now face No. 8-seeded Devin Mullings tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Should Spicijaric advance, he will play his semifinal match on Tuesday at 9 a.m. against either No. 2-seeded Sherra Parbhu of Notre Dame or unseeded Drew Eberly of Ohio State.
In the draw, Eberly is the only unseeded player left out of the eight competitors, while Parbhu is the highest seed remaining followed by teammate No. 3-seeded Stephen Bass. Overall, Ohio State has four competitors left in the field of eight, followed by Notre Dame with two and Illinois and Michigan State each with one.
In doubles, the tandem of junior Brandon Davis and senior GD Jones looked primed to continue Illinois' run of having a team in the finals of the Midwest Regional when they downed No. 10-seeded Brian Koniecko and Steven Moneke of Ohio State, 8-5, in the Round of 16. However, the Illini ran into the No. 2-seeded Ryan Keckley and Sherra Parbhu of Notre Dame in the quarterfinals, coming up short in the 8-2 loss.
