Finnegan opened qualifying play with a hard-fought win over Heather Harding of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, before extending another three set match in her favor against Petra Rehusova of DePaul, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Fudge downed Big Ten foe Kim Roberts of Wisconsin 6-1, 6-1, before polishing off a perfect day against some of the Big Ten's best when she defeated Alexis Conill of Northwestern 6-1, 7-5.

 

The last remaining obstacle for Finnegan comes in Chicago State's Golda Rubina in the third round, while Fudge will take on Western Michigan's Ashley Moccia in her final match of qualifying.  Should the Illini win, they will each clinch one of the eight qualifying spots into the singles main draw which begins on Saturday, Oct. 21, joining fellow teammate, junior Momei Qu, who received an automatic selection into the top bracket.

 

In doubles action, the Illini will begin their journey today in the main draw with two rounds to be played, with the first round set to begin at 2 p.m. Finnegan and Fudge open the bracket against Notre Dame's Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik, junior Alejandra Meza Cuadra and sophomore Shivani Davé will take on Minnesota's tandem of Tijana Koprivica and Ashley Schellhas, while Qu and freshman Kristina Minor will meet Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey of Ohio State.

 

In other singles action on Thursday, Meza Cuadra cruised through her first round of singles qualifying with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Katya Mironova of Wisconsin. The junior, however, could not continue her run, falling to Merel Beelen of Iowa 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. Both Davé and Minor dropped their opening round matches against Julie Voss of Ohio State (7-5, 6-4) and Kylie Moore of Marquette (7-5, 7-5), respectively. The Illini netters, however, did not leave the event without a victory, both rebounding in their consolation matches as Davé dominated Sam Kintzell of Bowling Green (6-0, 6-3), while Minor prevailed over Tiffany Foster of Wichita State (6-4, 6-1). The three Illini netters, who have concluded match play in the singles, will now turn their focus to doubles.
