LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Illinois women's tennis team had mixed results on the first day of competition at the Kentucky Fall Invitational. The Orange and Blue won both of their doubles matches, but senior Pavlina Akritas was the only one to advance in singles with her two victories on Friday, September 30 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.
"I'm disappointed because we didn't win more matches," said assistant coach JoAnne Russell." But tomorrow is a another day and we'll get right back after it. We played well but just didn't execute."
The third-seeded tandem of junior Emily Wang and freshman Shivani Dave' got a victory against Eastern Kentucky's Terin Roof and Hannah Bartsch in flight A doubles. They will face Sackmaster and Iwinski of Denver Saturday at noon. Sophomore Alejandra Meza Cuadra and Akritas were also victorious taking down Tara Byrne and Olya Batsula of East Tennessee State 8-6. They will face Danielle Petrisko and Lara Mauer of Kentucky on Saturday at noon as well.
Wang and Dave' were defeated in the first and second rounds of the flight A and B draws respectively. Cuadra lost in the first round but bounced back to advance to the semifinal in the back draw of flight C singles. She will take on Karolina Soor of Kentucky Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Akritas won twice on Friday and improves her overall singles record to 5-1. She will face Natalia Baez of Louisville at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Day two of the UK Fall Invitational begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with singles play. Doubles action is scheduled to start in the afternoon.
